Privacy Policy

Accentuate is an accent coach that helps you improve your English pronunciation. It works with your voice, and your voice is personal, so this policy is specific about what we collect, where it goes, and how you stay in control. It covers the Accentuate app for iPhone and our website, accentuateai.app. “Accentuate,” “we,” and “us” refer to the developer of Accentuate.

The short version

Information we collect

Your account

When you first open Accentuate, it creates a random account ID so the app can work before you sign in. To save your progress, you sign in with Apple. Apple shares a unique identifier with us and, if you allow it, your name and email address. You can hide your email address using Apple’s private relay service. Apple’s handling of your information is described in Apple’s Privacy Policy.

Information you enter

When you set up Accentuate, you enter your name, your native language, what matters most to you (being understood easily, or sounding as native as possible), where you speak English most, your level, and how often you want to practice. This is stored on your iPhone and saved to your account. If you add a profile photo, it stays on your iPhone.

Voice recordings

The app records audio only when you tap to record: during your assessment, in lessons, and in the Practice tab. Shadowing doesn’t record you. Recordings are scored on your iPhone and saved there so you can replay them in your history. A recording is sent to a service provider only in two cases, described below: when the phone can’t score it itself, and to create your Golden Voice if you choose to make one. We don’t store your recordings on our servers.

Practice data

As you practice, the app creates pronunciation scores for sentences, words, and individual sounds, along with your assessment results, lesson progress, streaks, and history. This is stored on your iPhone, and everything except your recordings is saved to your account.

Usage data

To learn which lessons work and where scoring goes wrong, the app sends us a record of each practice attempt: the lesson, the text you were asked to say, your scores for each sound, and how long it took. It also sends events such as reaching a step of setup, starting or leaving a lesson, and your answer when you rate feedback with Did we get this right? These records are linked to your account and never include your recordings.

Messages and beta sign-ups

If you email us, we receive your email address and your message. If you sign up for the beta on our website, we store your email address with our backend provider, Supabase.

Diagnostics from Apple

If you’ve chosen to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone’s settings, Apple may share crash reports and aggregated usage statistics with us. These don’t identify you personally.

What we don’t collect

Accentuate doesn’t collect your location, contacts, or advertising identifier, and it doesn’t include third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking software. The only photo it uses is a profile photo you choose, which stays on your iPhone.

How we use information

We use information only to provide and improve Accentuate:

We don’t sell your personal information, use it for advertising, or combine it with data from other companies to build a profile of you.

Service providers and third-party AI

Accentuate relies on a few service providers, including AI services, for some of its features. Each receives only what it needs for a specific feature and processes it to provide that feature. We only work with providers that are required to protect your information at least as well as this policy describes.

Supabase Accounts and app backend

Receives
Your account, your profile and progress, usage data, and email addresses from beta sign-ups on our website. It also passes requests on to Microsoft, ElevenLabs, and Anthropic, so our keys for those services never sit in the app.
Purpose
To sign you in, save and restore your progress, store usage data, and keep the list of beta sign-ups.
Retention
Until you delete your account, or for beta sign-ups, until you ask to be removed. How to delete your data. Supabase Privacy Policy

Microsoft Azure AI Speech Backup pronunciation scoring

Receives
Only a recording the phone can’t score itself, for example because it includes a word the phone doesn’t know, such as a name. With it, the text you were asked to say and its language.
Purpose
To score that recording, down to individual sounds.
Retention
Microsoft states that it doesn’t store audio sent for real-time pronunciation assessment. Microsoft Privacy Statement

ElevenLabs Golden Voice and coach audio

Receives
For your Golden Voice: your assessment recordings (or a paragraph you read, if they’re too short), labeled with an ID linked to your account. For coach audio: the text of words and sentences you practice, including text you enter yourself, and for your Golden Voice, a native coach’s recording to convert into your voice.
Purpose
To create your Golden Voice, and to generate practice audio in coach voices and in your Golden Voice.
Retention
Your Golden Voice is stored by ElevenLabs until it’s deleted, which happens when you delete your account. ElevenLabs Privacy Policy

Anthropic (Claude) Practice lesson generation

Receives
What’s needed to write a lesson for you: your native language, your goal and level, and the sounds you’re working on. It never receives your recordings, your name, or your email address.
Purpose
To generate the words and sentences you practice, aimed at the sounds you find hardest.
Retention
Anthropic states that it doesn’t use data sent through its API to train its models by default. Anthropic Privacy Policy

We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, or security of our users or others.

Your consent and choices

Keeping and deleting your data

If you can’t use the app, email us and we’ll delete your data within 30 days and confirm when it’s done.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, including the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and California, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal information, to receive a copy of it, to object to or restrict how we use it, and to withdraw your consent. You can delete your account and data in the app at any time. For anything else, email us and we’ll respond within 30 days. We won’t treat you differently for exercising your rights, and you can also contact your local data protection authority.

If you’re in the EEA or UK, we process your information to provide the features you ask for, with your consent (for example, to record your voice and create your Golden Voice), and for our legitimate interests in running, improving, and securing Accentuate and responding to you. Our service providers may process information in the United States and other countries, using appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.

Children

Accentuate isn’t directed to children under 13, or the minimum age required in your country, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we’ll delete it.

Security

Information sent between the app and our service providers is encrypted in transit using HTTPS, and our database only lets each account read its own data. The keys for our AI providers are kept on our servers, never in the app. Data on your iPhone is protected by iOS’s built-in security. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information and to limit what’s shared.

Our website

accentuateai.app doesn’t use cookies, analytics, or advertising. The site is hosted on GitHub Pages, which logs visitors’ IP addresses for security purposes, as described in the GitHub Privacy Statement. Its fonts are served by Google Fonts, which receives your IP address in order to deliver them, as described in the Google Fonts privacy FAQ. If you sign up for the beta, your email address is handled as described above.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top of this page. If the changes are significant, we’ll also let you know in the app before they take effect.
